At the beginnin g of 2259, Captain Joh n Sheridan replaces Sinclair as the mili tary gover nor of the s tation. He and the com mand staff l earn that the death of Presiden t Santia go was actua lly an assassina tion masterm inded by Vice Preside nt Clark (wh o assumed t he Preside ncy upon Santiago&a mp;#39;s dea th). A confl ict develops between t he Babylon 5 c ommand sta ff and the Psi Cor ps, an increas ingly au tocratic organ ization which oversees and cont rols the lives of hum an telepat hs. Comman der Ivanov a, the sec ond-in-command of the st ation, is se cretly a l atent telepath who has il licitly av oided regis tering with the Psi Cor ps. The Shadow s, an ancient and extrem ely powerful race who have recently emerged from hibernati on, are reveal ed to be the ca use of a va riety o f mysterious and disturbin g events, in cluding the attack on the Narn outp ost at the end of 2258 . Centauri Ambassad or Londo Mollari unknowingly e nlists their aid through his associa tion with the mysteriou s Mr. Mor den in the ong oing conf lict with the Nar n. The eld erly and a iling Centau ri emperor, long an a dvocate of reco nciliation w ith the Na rn, dies sudde nly while visi ting Baby lon 5. A nu mber of co nspirators, in cluding Londo Mollari a nd Refa, t ake contr ol of the C entauri g overnment by assassin ating their op ponents an d placing the late emperor&#3 9;s unsta ble nephe w on the throne. Their fir st act is to start open a ggression agai nst the Narn . After a full-scale war breaks out, t he Centauri e ventually c onquer Narn in a brut al attack invol ving mass driv ers, ou tlawed weap ons of mass destruction. Towards the end of the year, the Clark administrat ion begins to s how inc reasing ly totali tarian char acteristic s, clampi ng down on dissent and res trictin g freedom of speech. The Vorlons are reveal ed to be th e basis of le gends abou t angels on various wor lds, includi ng Earth, and are the ancient e nemies of the Sh adows.
