At the beginn ing of 2259, Captain John Sherida n replaces S inclair as the mil itary gov ernor of the st ation. He a nd the c ommand s taff learn th at the de ath of Preside nt Santiago was actually an assas sination mas terminded by V ice Presid ent Clark (w ho assum ed the Presi dency upon Sa ntiago&#3 9;s death). A confli ct develo ps between the Babylon 5 command staff and the Psi Corps, an incre asingly autoc ratic organizat ion whic h overse es and controls the lives of human telepa ths. Command er Ivanova , the se cond-in- command of the station, is secretl y a latent tel epath w ho has illici tly avoided r egisteri ng with the Psi Corps. The Shadows, a n ancie nt and e xtremely power ful race who h ave recently emerged fro m hibernatio n, are reveale d to be the cause of a variety of mysterious a nd disturbi ng even ts, including the attack on the Na rn outpost at t he end of 2258. The elde rly and ailing Centauri emperor, long an advocate o f reconcilia tion wit h the Narn, dies sudden ly while v isiting Babyl on 5. A numbe r of con spirato rs, incl uding Londo Mollari a nd Refa, take control of the Centa uri government by ass assinatin g their oppone nts and placing the late e mperor&# 39;s unsta ble nephe w on the throne. Their firs t act is to st art open aggression a gainst the Na rn. After a f ull-scale w ar breaks out, t he Cent auri even tually conquer Narn in a brut al attack i nvolvin g mass driver s, outlawed weapons of mass des truction. To wards t he end of the year, the Clark a dministr ation begins to show incr easingly totalitaria n characte ristics, clamping down on disse nt and restrict ing fre edom of spee ch. The Vorlons ar e revealed to be the basis of legend s about ange ls on var ious worlds, including Ear th, and ar e the ancient enemies of t he Shadows.
