At the beginni ng of 2259, Captain Jo hn Sheridan replaces Sincl air as the mi litary gover nor of the stat ion. He and t he command staff learn that the death of Pr esident Santiag o was actuall y an assassinat ion masterm inded by Vice P resident Clark (who a ssumed the Presidency upon Santiag o's death). A conflict de velops betwe en the Babylon 5 command s taff and the Psi Co rps, an in creasingly autocratic org anization w hich ove rsees and contr ols the li ves of human telepaths. Comm ander Ivanova, the sec ond-in-co mmand of the station, is secretly a latent telepath who has ill icitly avoide d registering with the Ps i Corps. The Shadows, an ancient and extremely powerful rac e who have recentl y emerged from hiberna tion, are revealed to be the ca use of a variety of m ysterio us and di sturbing e vents, inclu ding the attac k on th e Narn out post at the en d of 2258. Centauri Ambas sador Lo ndo Mollar i unknowingl y enlis ts their ai d through his association with the mysterious Mr. Morden in the ongoing conf lict with the Narn. T he elderly a nd ailing Centauri emper or, long an advoca te of reconcil iation with the Na rn, dies suddenly whil e visiting Bab ylon 5. A numbe r of conspi rators, inclu ding Londo M ollari and R efa, take cont rol of the Cent auri go vernment by ass assinating thei r opponents and placing th e late e mperor&#39 ;s unstable nephew on the throne. Th eir first ac t is to star t open aggress ion agai nst the Narn. A fter a full-sca le war breaks o ut, the Centauri eventual ly conquer Na rn in a br utal at tack inv olving mass dri vers, outla wed weapo ns of mass des truction. Tow ards the end o f the ye ar, the Clark adminis tration begins to s how increasin gly totalitaria n charac teristic s, clamping do wn on di ssent and re stricting fre edom of sp eech. The Vorlo ns are r evealed to be t he basis of lege nds abou t angels o n vario us worlds, inc luding Earth, and are the anc ient enemi es of t he Shadows.
